Dr. Isabel Pefianco Martin of the highly respected Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines visited Chuyko WEB major on July 8th, to give a special lecture, entitled "Circles within Circles: Philippine English Revisited." In this lecture, she proposed that Professor Braj Kachru's (World Englishes 理念の創立者）"3 circles model" is not as simple as we might think. The Philippines is considered to be a classic example of the Outer Circle, but Dr. Martin explained that in fact, there are people in the Philippines who are very much like Inner Circle speakers (such as people from the USA or Canada), and also people who do not live in the major cities, who use English very little, so they are like Expanding Circle Speakers (such as people in the countryside of China or Brazil) who have little need or knowledge of English. So in a way, all 3 circles are in one country! It was wonderful to hear the actual situation directly from a Philippine scholar! Dr. Martin also had a chance to visit the Chita Peninsula while she was here, and enjoyed good seafood in Morozaki, and visited the famous ceramic artist, Senko Yamamoto, in Mihama-cho, to experience some local Aichi culture!
