World Englishes

Master's Degree, World Englishes

Given that English today is globally used, often being referred to as a world language, the number of non-native English speakers exceeds by several times that of the native English speakers--a condition that has brought forth many new "indigenized" varieties of the English language. In this global context, attention is currently focused on a new theoretical concept of English as an international language, which proposes that English as used in the United Kingdom, in the United States, and in other native English-speaking countries should not be regarded as the only varieties of the English language. The fundamental goal of this program is to help students better understand this plurilingual approach to English and to cultivate human resources armed with a strong command of the English language as they play an active role in various fields.
